Pergamum

Our whirlwind adventure to Western Turkey with my mom was to explore the 7 Churches of the Revelation. In the Bible, toward the end, are a list of prophesies about 7 Churches. Those are the towns we went to see…had the prophesies come to pass? First stop was Pergamum. In Pergamum, there are a few different areas to see. The Serapium (Red Basilica), Temple of Trajan perched in the Acropolis, Temple of Asklepius, a steep amphitheater and sprawling marketplace. Pergamum is said to have one of the first major healing centers. There were some carvings of 2 snakes wrapped around a staff as a symbol of healing. What is the symbol that pharmacies use today? 2 snakes wrapped around a staff! (For more on how that symbol came into use, do a search on “Rod of Asclepius” and “Tiresias”) It is amazing how many symbols from antiquity are still active in modern culture! Enjoy the photos!
